Like a string of paper dolls we followed hand in hand to the playground and sat
We knew people were dying today, but we didn’t know why
Sometimes I think we still don’t
Sometimes we do forget
Every time a whole group of people is wiped away, we say never
Every time the world shakes and entire pieces are ripped from its very core, we say never
Every time we say never, and we pray we’ll do better, and we plan for forever
And more than 20 years have flown by, we’ve grown up,
and we still don’t know why we are still standing and they had to die
We are still breathing, and they had to die
We are still longing, and they had to die
We got married and started families and went to college and made plans and woke up tomorrow and learned and promised and planned and then
Forgot
We celebrate birthdays
every
single
year
And every time I blow one more candle out I make wishes about love and peace and family and future
Then I watch the smoke that hangs in the air after and remember
Sometimes we do forget
